Day 4- East Iceland

Today was alot of driving and seeing everything from the bus or getting out for 15 minutes to snap some pictures.

Our first stop was to see the Hvalnes light house by the Austerhorn cape. The bright orange against the blue sky was also lute perfection and was a lot of fun to photograph. The view of the water was also breathtaking and the gorgeous weather added to the fabulous stop.

Quick stop at Djupivogur where we ran in to a small souvenir shop of an artists who sold some of her ceramic pieces as well as handmade knitting pieces from socks to sweaters. We also stopped to see an art installment piece called The Stone Eggs of Merry Bay which was 34 large stone eggs from all the birds found in iceland. It was an interesting installation piece on the harbor.

Driving along the Road 1 that runs on the outside of the country was incredible today. The mountains looked like giant nail scrapes along the entire side of the mountain. Perfectly paralleled ridges in the land. We just stared at the mountains surrounding us in silence. It’s hard to fathom how many years had to go by for the mountains to look like that and to see what the mountains look like under the glaciers is so interesting.

Stopped in Stöđvarfjörđur town where some people went to see the Petra Rock Collection museum which is a giant personal collection of rocks from this one geologist named Petra Sveinstottór. What was truly interesting about this town was our guide said that the supermarket closed and there are weeks sometimes more than a month where the road to the town is closed so people have to drive to the next town and buy supplies for a month or two. I was so intrigued by this because it makes me wonder how this town eill keep surviving? It’s such a foreign concept for me to have to prepare for weeks of possibly not being able to have any connection outside of my village.

We then drove for a while and finally arrived at Egilsstadir where our hotel Hollormsstar was. This area is very wooded and there are lost of trees which is not what we have been seeing so far. Once I dropped my stuff off in the room I walked down to the little waterfall at the end of the road.
